- This popular variety of the first year Sacagawea dollar is affectionately known as the "Cheerios" dollar, and it is most readily identifiable by the pronounced enhancement evident to the detail of the eagle's tail feathers. These pieces were struck during the late summer or early fall of 1999, from 2000-dated dies. Only 5,500 examples were distributed by the Mint in boxes of Cheerios cereal as part of a promotional program with General Mills to advertise the new "golden" dollar coin. Each distribution also included an accompanying 2000 Lincoln cent.
Numismatists first recognized the "Cheerios" dollar as a distinct variety in June 2005. It is cataloged as the Boldly Detailed Tail Feathers variety in the popular Cherrypickers Guide by Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton, in which it is attributed as FS-902. This variety is sometimes referred to as a pattern or protype since it includes the reverse design detail as intended by Mint engraver Thomas D. Rodgers, Sr. In the event, however, the Mint smoothed out the eagle's tail feathers before commencing regular issue Sacagawea dollar production in November 1999.
Given the way they were distributed, it is not surprising that many "Cheerios" dollars were obtained by non-numismatists who eventually spent the coins or otherwise mishandled them. This fact explains the rarity of high-grade examples.
