A handsome golden-honey example that will appeal to advanced gold type collectors and series specialists alike. Boldly impressed with a frosty texture to the finish, the surfaces are far smoother than one might anticipate at the basal BU grade level. The penultimate Philadelphia Mint issue in the brief Classic Head quarter eagle series, the 1838 is not quite as rare as the 1837 or 1839, but is far scarcer than the 1834, 1835 and 1836. In Mint State, as here, the issue is rare and represents a significant find for the astute bidder whenever offered through auction.
