- A visually pleasing early dollar with bright, frosty to semi-reflective surfaces shining forth powerfully through iridescent champagne-rose toning. The strike is nicely centered and well executed, a touch of softness at and above the central reverse easily forgiven. Faint hairlines are noted for accuracy, but this piece presents very well in a lightly circulated example of this challenging silver dollar design type. The BB-166 die marriage is one of the most available of the 19 known pairings of the 1799-dated silver dollar issue. Notable for the so-called "apostrophe" die defect on the reverse after the second letter S in STATES, this variety has long been sought by variety specialists. The BB-166 was well used in commerce, and the bulk of all known specimens are at the VF and lower EF grade levels, and become scarce any finer. The offered coin is sure to attract strong bidding activity from astute early dollar enthusiasts and discerning type collectors. BB Die State V, rare, as Q. David Bowers (2013) asserts that only 10-20% of 1799 BB-166 dollars are of this die state.
