1843-C Liberty Quarter Eagle. Small Date. Winter Variety 1 (4-C), the only known dies. Die State III. AU-58 (NGC). Lustrous medium gold with a pleasing in-hand appearance. From a mintage of 2,988 pieces for the variety, far fewer than were struck of its Large Date counterpart. Not boldly struck but strong enough to warrant mention; much of the design is present. Typically found at VF or EF, this issue circulated long and hard in the Charlotte area; AU and finer examples of the date are few and far between. Late die state, swelling at Liberty's bust, heavy die crack from dentils at 7:00 to Liberty's bust. Only a half dozen examples of the date have been graded finer than the present piece; the log jam of grading <em>events</em> at the AU-58 level leads this writer to conclude some few resubmissions may have occurred. An elusive issue in a tip-top grade, a coin that will make a nice addition to virtually any collection.&nbsp;
