1796 S-93 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown.Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with subtle hints of lighter reddish steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas outside the wreath. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is fabulous. The only marks are a dull nick on the jawline near the earlobe, a shallow nick at the right foot of the A in STATES, and a spot of darker toning at the left top of the D in UNITED. MDS, Breen state VI, with clearly defined die clashmarks on both sides and strong die cracks at ERICA and the fraction. A retained cud break connects the tops of CA to the rim but the retained cud break at ER has not formed. Graded MS62 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #28657. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS63. This cent was removed from an old green-label PCGS slab graded MS64BN, and it was covered with oxidation that obscured the luster and severely diminished the eye appeal (which may have affected the Bland and Noyes assessments). A delicate brushing brought it back to life. The cent is choice and the eye appeal is truly superior. And it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer.(PCGS # 35816) Value $60,000 - UP
