- 1871 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Proof-65 (PCGS). Delicate teal and pewter-gray hues span the surfaces of this magnificent gem. A mere 960 pieces were struck for collectors of the day and of those that exist often show mishandling in the form of nicks or other problems. Thus gems are quite rare today, with PCGS recording 18 specimens at this grade level, and importantly just two finer. The open fields and intricate devices retain their mint surfaces and lack the commonly seen heavy hairlines from careless wiping to remove dust, enough so to retain this lofty grade level. A formidable rarity at the gem level not only for the date but for the Seated dollar type as well, as these were minted in quite limited numbers and simply did not survive from these early periods of their issue in such handsome quality.
