- 1859 Gold Dollar. Proof-63 Cameo (PCGS). The 1859 is the first proof Gold Dollar with a reported mintage figure. It is also the highest-mintage proof Gold Dollar produced up to that point in time. Yet although 80 coins were reportedly struck, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (<em>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933</em>, 2008 edition) account for only 15-20 survivors. Obviously many examples of this issue were melted in the Mint when they failed to find willing buyers among contemporary collectors.<br /> There is no lack of willing buyers for classic proof gold coins in the numismatic market of the 21st century, for advanced collectors recognize these pieces as defining elements in the finest cabinets. This Choice 1859 G$1 is destined for inclusion in such a collection, for it is an attractive example of an undeniably rare issue. Well contrasted between frosty devices and mirrored fields, this piece combines a medium-gold obverse with a reddish-gold reverse. Both sides exhibit a bit of light haziness to the surfaces, but there are no handling marks of note apart from some wispy hairlines.
