- Tied for FINEST graded 1873 Seated Liberty dollar at both services, this is a very HIGH END and attractive SUPERB GEM example of the final date of this series. Both sides are awash in a melange of deep, rich (but not dark) toning. Shades of violet, blue, rose, gold, olive, and pewter-silver delightfully come to life when the light hits the brilliant mirrored fields. Watery reflection comes to the fore, which contrasts nicely against the well struck devices, imparting a moderate touch of cameo-like contrast. American coinage saw a major change in 1873. The two-cent, three-cent silver, half dimes, and silver dollars all ceased to be produced, and the mint introduced the trade dollar to facilitate foreign trade in China. Only 600 Proof silver dollars were struck for collectors, which were mostly included in sets; since the denomination was to be discontinued, any example left unsold was likely melted. Of those that survive, this marvelous coin is virtually unrivaled in terms of state of preservation, quality, and eye appeal! PCGS 7, NGC 6, CAC 2. This is the unique PR66+ at NGC. Sold as part of the Blue Moon Collection in March 2017, this coin sold for $25,850 as a PCGS PR66 CAC. In PR66+ the Collectors Universe value is listed at $32,500. With NONE FINER in the designation, you will delight in owning this stunning SUPERB example, and we expect very strong bidding from type and dollar collectors. Good luck! Cert.
