1878 Pattern Standard Dollar. Judd-1554, Pollock-1733. Rarity-5. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-53 (NGC). Obv:Barber Head, Liberty facing left, general style used on the pattern $50 pieces of 1877. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above, seven stars are arranged around the border seven left, six right, and the date 1878 is below. Rev:Perched eagle with drooped wings, holding olive branch and arrows. The Latin Motto E PLURIBUS UNUM in small Gothic letters curves above the eagle. Around the border is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, the denomination ONE DOLLAR below. A generally silver-gray example with a few blushes of iridescent reddish-apricot toning around the obverse periphery. Wispy hairlines are noted for accuracy, as is a shallow edge bruise just before 9 o'clock on the obverse. The Judd-1554 listing is now recognized as encompassing three distinctly different die varieties; no mention of these varieties is found in the 10th edition of the Judd reference. These are listed as Pollock-1733, 1737, and 1741 in Andrew W. Pollock's United States Patterns and Related Issues. Pollock assigned rarity ratings for each of the three die varieties with Pollock-1733, offered here, receiving a Rarity-6 rating. The Liberty Head on the obverse is a copy of the design featured on the $50 half union patterns coined during the preceding year. These dollar patterns were the workmanship of William Barber and competed against another design by Mint Engraver George Morgan for a silver dollar coin to be issued pursuant to the provisions of the newly passed Bland-Allison Act. As is well known to collectors, the George Morgan design won the contest, and was adopted for silver dollar coinage in the very same year. Provenance: From the Cassidy Collection. PCGS# 61915.
