- 1839-D Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 2-A. AU-50 (PCGS). OGH. The year 1839 saw the initial production of what would become the long lived Liberty half eagle series. The 1839(-P), 1839-C and 1839-D all represent a one year type as they display a style of portrait on the obverse not seen in any other half eagle date. The 1839-D is of even further importance as it is the only D-mint Liberty half eagle that displays the mintmark on the obverse in the field between the date and the bottom of Liberty's portrait. This sharply impressed, minimally worn survivor comes down to us from a mintage of 18,939 pieces, and it is superior to the typically encountered example in VF or EF grades. Light, even, yellow-gold color throughout, with no singularly distracting abrasions to report. Very nice for the grade.
