- Welcome home old friend! This impressive GEM 1838-O dime is among the FINEST KNOWN of this early issue! A beautiful GEM example there is nothing we do not LOVE about this AMAZING coin. A short lived, visually balanced type which does not have the stars surrounding Gobrecht's Seated Liberty. This is the F-101a die variety, very scarce, a later die state with cuds on the obverse rim and a die crack through the U in UNITED. The O mintmark is boldly repunched. Sharply struck with full definition on both sides the surfaces are unblemished and virtually devoid of contact. There is a faint blush of light to medium gold on the brilliantly lustrous fields and frosted devices. The eye appeal is incredible! This coin is Ex. Eugene Gardner Collection, Part 2, Heritage, October 2014, lot 98238. Mr. Gardner bought this coin in August 2007 from our sister firm, Legend Numismatics. PCGS 4, NGC 4, CAC 3. There is just a single MS65+ graded finer. In the Gardner sale, this coin realized $28,200, and we sold another example of this die state in our May 2016 Regency Auction XVII for $24,675. The current CAC CPG value is $24,200 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is $22,500. There is just a single MS65+ that last sold back in April 2015 for $32,900. We anticipate this GEM selling for a very strong bid. Type or date collectors take notice and don't let this AMAZING coin pass you by! Cert. Number 81760394 PCGS # 4564.00
