- THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART V Under the direction of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the mint's attention turned to silver dollars at the expense of all other silver denominations. Only 4,800 half dollars were struck in 1879, and these are very scarce in all grades. This is a frosted and lustrous GEM example. Iridescent silver-white over brilliant silver surfaces this coin has a sharp strike and pleasing visual allure. The reverse is quite flashy and distinctly Prooflike. PCGS 41, NGC 38. The most recent example sold in our February 2023 installment of the Boylston Collection, realizing $3,055. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $3,750.
