- Prooflike fields support frosty motifs on both sides of this breathtakingly beautiful Capped Bust half dime. The strike is virtually full, the obverse with pin point definition to all of the star centrils, the reverse otherwise crisp with just a hint of the often-seen softness at the junction of the eagle's right wing and shield. The entire package is dressed in delicate champagne-gold iridescence that accents the silky smooth texture of the surfaces. Although not a rare die pairing in an absolute sense, the 1835 LM-8.1 is described as "the rarest LM-8 marriage" in the 1998 book Federal Half Dimes: 1792-1837 by Russell J. Logan and John W. McCloskey. The authors call out the MS-61 offered as lot 6289 in Heritage's 1998 ANA Sale as a significant example of this die state. Certified MS-65 by PCGS, and verified by CAC, the present example is an undeniable condition rarity that clearly ranks among the finest known survivors from the 1835 LM-8 dies.
