A VERY RARE and underappreciated date. Only 15,136 were struck, and David Akers write, this " is the first in a long run of very rare low mintage Philadelphia Mint Half Eagles. During the 20 year period from 1858 to 1877, only the 1861 and 1873 had mintages in excess of 20,000 pieces. The 1858 is not often seen in any condition but when one is available, VF or EF is the likely grade." Today, PCGS CoinFacts estimates 100 examples survive in all grades. Light scuffs from its brief stay in circulation can be seen on both obverse and reverse. A wealth of surviving luster amplifies the brilliant yellow gold surfaces. Sharply struck, this very CHOICE AU example has a great look. PCGS 2, NGC 0. PCGS has graded less than 1 1/2 dozen finer. The other AU55+ was CAC approved and brought $4,320 nearly two years ago.
