- The MIST Collection. From the standpoint of collecting by proof type, one is wise to consider the importance of the selection process for an ideal Morgan dollar representative. As a percentage of the original emission over a twenty-seven year period, a considerable portion has become impaired over the decades such that any "gem" example of any date is worth consideration by the astute collector. Take the present 1882 as an example - a coin that has no designation shown on the slab, but which appears, under close scrutiny, to merit some mention of the contrast between frothy devices and mirrored fields, albeit the latter defy easy observation on account of broad splashes of color. Forming irregular rings around the obverse, one fines flashy ocean-blue, cinnamon-orange and turquoise-gold hues, while the reverse exhibits much less mossy green and olive-gold.
A sensational strike is never a given even for proof representatives but has no concerns here, since both sides boast extraordinary sharpness, right down to visible undulation of the ribbon at the bottom of the wreath. As a bonus, an outstanding individual identifier takes the form of a sizable struck-through thread curling all over the eagle's right (observed) wing. Very rarely will the lucky collector find such a distinctive, yet somehow subtle pedigree marker. Pile on top of that, one of the most desirable of all slabs (NGC embossed back) and one has an undeniable showcase for the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award.
