A Condition Census level B-19, BB-155, a challenging Rarity-5 die pairing. This coin has a very high end look, and though not listed in the 2013 listing of Dave Bowers' list of Notable Specimens, noted numismatic scholar Ron Guth places this one as #2 in his census, behind the Anderson-Dupont-Norweb-Cardinal Collection coin, and in front of the Hesselgesser and Warren Miller pieces. Indeed, our consignor said that Warren Miller told him this coin is finer than the coin in his famed collection. A borderline Mint State example, the friction is only perceptible with the aid of a glass. A wealth of luster glows with a bold emberlike brilliance in the protected recesses of the design elements. A dusting of pewter and soft dove gray toning is joined by light golden accents and accents of lilac that come out as you rotate the surfaces in a light. Nicely struck from an advanced state of the dies (Die State IV) with extensive obverse die cracks. A glass reveals a few light lines and a tick or two, none of which are of any consequence. The eye appeal is great. PCGS 99, NGC 88, CAC 24. Its been five years since a PCGS/CAC example has sold in auction, realizing $18,000 in November 2017. More recently we sold a non-CAC example from the Dale Friend Collection, April 2022 for $22,913, which is well above the PCGS and CAC CPG values. We like the look of this Condition Census Rarity-5 better. Good luck. Cert. Number 25311278 PCGS # 40043
