"1787" Fugio Copper. "New Haven Restrike." Newman 104-FF, W-17560. Copper or Bronze. MS-63 BN (NGC). Deep golden-tan with splashes of "mint" orange in the protected areas, especially on the reverse. Uniform <em>raised </em>die rust spot throughout both sides, heaviest in the reverse rings. Thought for decades to be from original dies that were found in the store of Broome &amp; Platt in New Haven Connecticut, the&nbsp;die work of the "restrikes" is&nbsp;somewhat finer and more uniform than would have been possible given&nbsp;the technical abilities of the 1780s. Jim Spilman of the <em>Colonial News Letter </em>thought these dies to be products of the Scovill Minting manufactory, in business in the 1850s and later in Waterbury, Connecticut. Choice for the grade and worthy of a premium bid.
