- Wonderfully original and very pleasing for the grade. Beautifully toned surfaces show off varied golden, orange, and reddish hues that outline the devices in the fields. The actual wear is barely perceptible on the highest points and appears as gentle friction on the devices and in the fields. A few ancient scattered ticks can be found with a strong glass and a few mint made adjustment marks can be seen. The reverse has a die crack from the rim at about 6:00 through the tail and up around the right side of the shield. The colorful, rich golden-orange-red tones make this an incredibly gorgeous looking early eagle. This is an early gold specialists' type of coin! It is a VERY SCARCE die marriage, listed in Bass-Dannreuther reference as Rarity-4+ with an estimated 90-110 known in all grades. In an earlier die state, the extra reverse star is visible boldly on the last cloud, under the F of OF. This coin, struck from a later die state, shows only vestiges of the star, and you do need a strong glass to see it. It is said that Harry Bass was the first to describe the star in the cloud feature on an example he purchased in 1966. It is curious because the star punched on the cloud is a smaller size than those used on gold eagle dies. BD-5 is also the only collectible die pair for the Large Reverse Stars variety, with the BD-6 being a Rarity-7 die pair with about 6-10 known. PCGS 8, NGC 1, CAC 1. No PCGS/CAC-graded piece has sold since November 2013. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $48,300. VERY RARE in any Mint State grade, this is a very high end AU58 with a very rare look. For the early gold specialist, this coin has a lot to offer! Cert. Number 27401332 PCGS # 88565
