- 1876-CC Liberty Half Eagle. AU-58 (NGC). A lovely coin with pleasing green-gold toning, and sunset-orange accents near the peripheries. The design motifs reveal outstanding definition, with just the slightest weakness observed on the eagle's arrows and right (facing) talons. High point wear is minimal, and occurs on Liberty's hair bun and upper hair detail. Wispy hairlines exist in the fields, and a couple of shallow luster breaks are noted on the right side of the obverse, between the rim and Liberty's neck and cap, respectively. The diagnostic die lump is seen on Liberty's neck just below her jaw, and there is a thin engravers scratch off the lower part of the B in LIBERTY. Exceptional surfaces that retain a fair amount of the mint reflectivity in the fields. For the year the mintage came to a halt after a mere 6,887 pieces were coined, today there are less than a few hundred known in all grades. Mint State pieces are prohibitive, with just two recorded in the NGC Census and PCGS Population Report data, and precious few beyond those that merit the About Uncirculated grade level. Highly collectible and desirable for any specialist, and a worthy acquisition to pursue.
