- THE TERRA PISTACIA COLLECTION A near-GEM example of the famed Snowden dollar. Struck from the regular 1885 Proof Morgan dollar dies, the edge is lettered with ******E * PLURIBUS * UNUM****** on the edge, imparted by a machine developed by Archibald Loudon Snowden, the superintendent of the Philadelphia mint. It is a fun numismatic curiosity, especially when you consider that motto is now included twice on this coin, once on the obverse and once on the edge. This is a Rarity6- pattern issue that is rarely offered. Glorious deep toning in shades of rich tangerine-rose, slate-blue, lilac-gray, and golden-tan hues are brought out by the watery underlying reflection in the fields. Sharply struck devices stand out. The surfaces hold up to close scrutiny with a strong glass and the eye appeal is great. Ex Charles Steigerwalt, May 1899; J.M. Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Jr., via Stack's in 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg Collection, Bowers & Merena, May 1996, lot 297. PCGS 2, NGC 3, CAC 1. A non-CAC NGC coin sold in August 2014 for $16,450. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $15,000. The Simpson coin was PCGS PR65+ and sold for $22,200 in May 2022. This fabulous coin is worthy of a very strong bid and will fit into any serious pattern or Morgan dollar set! Good luck. Cert. Number 4491581 PCGS # 62189
