- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. Pearl gay surfaces show a tinge of champagne-pink. The strike is full and sharply detailed in the absence of all but trivial high point friction.<p>This otherwise readily obtainable die pairing of the 1831 Large Letters quarter will prove challenging in the popular collector grades of EF and AU, highlighting the fleeting nature of this offering for astute collectors. This Browning number shares its obverse with the 1831 B-4, and its reverse with the 1831 B-5, which is also seen in additional pairings through 1833.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> During the 20 years I have owned this coin I purchased only one other example of this die variety. Both examples were purchased raw and certified years later, coming back at the same grade. As this was my plate coin, I released the other one through a Stack's Bowers Galleries auction so that it could be enjoyed by another collector.
