Exceedingly Rare 1877-CC $10 1877-CC Liberty Head Eagle. Winter 1-A. AU-50 (PCGS). CAC. This lustrous and generally bold AU 1877-CC eagle represents one of the most important bidding opportunities in our current offering of the Fairmont Collection. An originally and nicely preserved coin, delicate silver and pale pink overtones enliven a base of light honey-gold color. There are only wispy handling marks, most of which are easily overlooked. Ten-dollar gold eagle production remained low at the Carson City Mint in 1877 as the facility concentrated on subsidiary silver coinage as well as trade dollars and, to a lesser extant, double eagles. One of just 3,332 examples struck that year, this 1877-CC is an uncommonly high grade survivor of one of the rarest of the Carson City Mint eagles of 1870 to 1893. Only 70 to 80 distinct examples are believed extant (per Rusty Goe, 2020) and it is unknown in Mint State. Just two to three examples in Choice AU comprise the top of the census, followed by a handful of pieces at the AU-53 and AU-50 levels. The cream of this group are the four specimens that have met with strict approval from CAC, including this newcomer to the census from the Fairmont Collection. Sure to command a strong premium from a discerning Carson City Mint or Liberty Head gold coin collector. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
