- Superb Grade Eight-Pointed Star Fugio
1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 15-Y, W-6915. Rarity-2. STATES UNITED, 8-Pointed Star on Label. EF-45 (PCGS).
145.7 grains. Attractive pale olive and gold with burnt orange hues around central obverse device. Some luster survives, though subtle hairlines suggest a long-ago light cleaning. The centering is ideal, with nearly full denticles on both sides, and the detail is as good as any specimen of this variety we can recall. Both eight-pointed stars are entirely visible, though the top one is bolder, as always. Finer than the better Boyd-Ford piece and arguably a candidate for high condition census. No fully Mint State specimens are known, just a few nice AU coins and a handful of choice EFs. This deserves to be counted among their number and should find a place in an advanced collection.
PCGS# 898.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of December 1969, lot 532. Lot tag included.
