1857 Braided Hair Cent. N-3. Rarity-5-. Small Date. Proof-63 RB (PCGS). Deep mint orange tempered with lively rose iridescence on the obverse, the reverse largely chocolate brown with traces of mint orange. We note two obverse toning spots, the first in the dentils near 5 o'clock, the other in the dentils at 11 o'clock. From a modest proof mintage for the date, probably on the order of a few dozen pieces all told, though Mint records of the era do not record the actual figure. However, enough proofs of this terminal date in the series exist that most collectors who desire one can obtain a specimen with patience and strong bidding skills. Out of the numismatic marketplace for nearly 50 years, and now offered for your bidding appreciation.
