- From the Oak Crest Collection. A world-class rarity, among the rarest in not just the 19-coin Carson City set of $5 gold, but in the entire Liberty half eagle series. This is a very rare issue in AU grades. All told, estimates range indicate that it is likely fewer than 75-85 examples survive from an original mintage of 7,416 (the second lowest in the entire CC mint series). The current AU50 is solidly in the condition census, among the nine finest graded by PCGS. The present 73-CC is a wonderful example for the advanced collector. Possessing a very good strike for the date, the details are essentially full, flat due to the light, even wear from a brief time in wild west commerce. Much luster remains in the fields and when combined with a light source a rich, reddish-orange hue blends with the rich amber-honey gold. No major distractions, again, not a common trait for a coin that saw commercial use in the early 1870s in the western portions of the United States. A strong glass will reveal a few ancient reeding marks, but these do not have a major impact on this coin's excellent eye appeal. PCGS 2, NGC 5. There are eight coins finer combined at both services, the finest being the ANA '76-Bass-Battle Born coin, graded PCGS MS62. The 2001 Winter census lists coins down to XF45. This coin was purchased by our consignor in 2006. The extensive Old West Collection, sold by ANR in 2006 lacked an example--indication as to how rare this date is. A small group came out of the Bass Collection, all long dispersed. Most examples known are graded in the VF/XF range, and even these are rare and rarely appear on the market. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $25,000 and the PCGS AU50 to sell in auction, sold four years ago, in a February 2014 auction sale, realizing $21,150. This highly attractive coin has a better overall look, and will certainly entice any collector of rare date U.S. gold, whether focused on Carson City issues, or not. The word opportunity appears a lot in the descriptions for the Oak Crest coins, as in do not let the opportunity pass you by, for once this one sells, who knows when the next high grade example of this KEY issue will become available again.
