- Ex Blue Hill Collection, as noted on the insert. This is a wonderful collector grade K-6, the more "common" of these uber popular Humbert "slugs". Perennially popular among collectors, these “ingots" or “slugs" were struck in the U.S. Assay office in San Francisco, under the direction of Augustus Humbert. His mint operated for several years before the Federal government took over operations and eventually in 1854 opened as the official branch mint in San Francisco. Because of his reputation for honesty, Humbert’s operations put out of business many of the other assaying and minting firms that opened after the discovery of gold in California. Indeed, these “slugs" were so well received in “old west" commerce, even after the official branch mint at San Francisco poured federal issue gold coins into commercial streams, they were still widely circulated. The Kagin-6 variety is considered to be R-4. Many of the private "territorial" issues that were produced for use during the early days of the Gold Rush were subsequently melted down and turned into regular federal issued gold coins. These iconic issues contain nearly 2.5 ounces of gold. A very pleasing, moderately circulated example. Because of the heft of these massive gold coins, there are some minor bumps and marks, but overall they are minor and do not detract from the impressive visual effect. Showing good definition on both sides despite the wear, the lettering around the edge is only slightly soft in areas but the central devices are crisp. Rich golden color is original, showing deeper olive-green hues mixed in with the orange gold. The eye appeal is great. PCGS 21, NGC 11, CAC 3. The most recent example we sold was an NGC XF40 CAC that brought $36,425 in October 2020; the other CAC-approved XF40 sold in June 2016, which brought just shy of $40,000. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $47,500 and the CAC CPG value is $48,500. We expect this one will bring close to that. We love the look of these old slugs and they are always a popular item in our sales. Good luck. Cert. Number 84009309 PCGS # 10214
