- Undated (Circa 1663-1672) St. Patrick or Mark Newby Halfpenny. Vlack 1-B, W-11540. Copper. Reeded Edge. Large Letters. VF-30.
122.5 grains. Glossy and attractive light brown with bold sharpness for the series. The splash is mostly above the crown, intersecting the T of FLOREAT and the rim nearby, brassy at peripheries but dark and rough within. A few obverse spots are seen, largest under E of REX, three circular contact points near central obverse and a similar mark on reverse beneath G of GREX. The reverse shows more widespread green pitting. As noted in the Ford VII sale, this die pair was "said to be very rare by Breen with only one other known, the Maris plate coin," but a fair number have sold in modern times. The Ford example, similarly sharp, brought $4,887.50 in 2005. Craige's envelope refers to this as both Vlack 1-B and Breen 2-C.1.
PCGS# 46.
Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection.
