- 1869 Shield Nickel. FS-301. Narrow Date, Reverse of 1867. MS-66 (NGC). Lightly toned in wisps of iridescent gold, this lustrous Gem exhibits an inviting satin finish to both sides. This variety, previously known as the Tall Date (as seen on the current NGC holder), had its name changed to Narrow Date. As reported by Fivaz and Stanton (2015), this was done "by Shield nickel specialists because the digits for other Shield nickels are this same relative size." On the present example, a couple of sharp die cracks originate from the lower right obverse border. Provenance: From the Q. David Bowers Collection. NGC Census (Narrow Date variety only): 2; 0 finer.
