Silver 1963 Assay Commission Medal Rarity The Keusch Specimen Originally Presented to Deputy Mint Director Frederick W. Tate 1963 United States Assay Commission Medal. Silver. 57 mm. By Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro. JK AC-107a. Rarity-7. Edge Incuse FREDERICK W. TATE. MS-68 (NGC). Handsome pewter gray patina is seen on both sides of this lovely sandblast-finish specimen. The surfaces are virtually pristine. The reverse design of this issue, showing Assay commissioners engaged in weighing and counting coins, is the only accurate depiction of the actual work of the Commission to appear in this long series, and ranks as one of Gasparro's best works. The obverse is a reduction of the regular secretary of the Treasury medal for C. Douglas Dillon. According to the Julian-Keusch reference, this was the last Assay Commission medal to be struck only in silver. Examples are rare, and this is the only specimen that we have handled in at least a dozen years. It is the Keusch specimen, originally presented to Frederick W. Tate, deputy director of the Mint in 1963 under Director Eva Adams. Our (Bowers and Merena's) November 1995 sale of the Roger M. Fred, Jr. Collection also included an example of JK AC-107 as lot 1150. In 1963 the Assay Commission, which met on February 13, included a number of prominent numismatic personalities: Elston G. Bradfield, Mrs. Oscar H. Dodson, Roy O. Lefman, Matthew H. Rothert, and Leonard W. Stark. Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the Ernest E.
