After the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, the focus of the mint changed to the churning out of hundreds of millions of Morgan dollars; the striking of silver minor coinage (dimes, quarters, and half dollars) shrank to low five-figure levels. Only 10,000 circulation strike half dollars were made in 1881. The presently offered "plus" graded GEM is essentially fully Prooflike and boldly lustrous with a strong, frosted strike. Beautiful purple, magenta, tangerine, and gold toning grace both sides, fully blanketing the obverse and framing brilliant silver centers on the reverse. The eye appeal is truly SUPERB and the quality of this beautiful coin is off the charts for the assigned grade. PCGS 15, NGC 9, CAC 4. There are just two graded MS65+ at PCGS, and just 21 are graded finer. This marvelous GEM sold for $7,800 in August 2021. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $8,000 and is $10,000 in MS66. What a great looking coin that is bound for a sensational collection of toned type coins or an AMAZING set of Seated Liberty halves. Either way, we expect very strong bidding when it crosses the block. Cert. Number 44729270 PCGS # 6363
