- Newcomb-12, considered to be Rarity-6 as a Proof; apparently the only die pair used to produce the fifty Proofs struck, of which perhaps 15-20 survive in all grades (combined PCGS and NGC have graded a total of 18 pieces) The present GEM is stunning! Deep, coppery mirrors beam with ample original RED color mellowing into a violet-brown. The surfaces are completely problem free and totally devoid of all but the most insignificant flecks seen only at certain angles and with a powerful glass. Every detail is razor sharp in definition with full, sculpted, crisp, almost high relief definition. The eye appeal is extremely high end and the technical quality is absolutely superb. The splashes of red really capture the light and dazzles the viewers gaze. Only 50 Proofs were struck. PCGS 3, NGC 1, CAC 3. The last example to sell was nearly seven years ago, realizing a record $28,200 in June 2014 as part of the Gene Gardner Collection. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $30,000 and just a single PR66 RB is graded higher at PCGS. A great and rare coin that is worthy of a fantastic collection of early copper. Bidding will be fierce! Cert. Number 39356800 PCGS # 1992.00
