- Coin alignment. Obv: An upright eagle with outstretched wings stands on a cloud, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1836 below. Rev: A laurel wreath encircles the denomination TWO CENTS. Deep steel-olive patina with hints of lighter pewter here and there, and subtle undertones of cobalt blue and pinkish-rose. Lightly handled, seemingly from actual commercial use, yet still boldly defined overall. An ancient carbon spot within the letter C in CENTS on the reverse is the only singularly mentionable blemish. This type was restruck by the Mint starting in the late 1850s, but the offered coin is presumably an original, given the circulation strike format. If so, the composition should be 10% silver, 90% copper. The uspatterns.com website accounts for about two dozen examples of Judd-53 in numismatic hands.
