- 1867 Liberty Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS). Honey gold surfaces with boldly retained luster and a hint of reflectivity. Sharply struck with just a touch of wear the only impedance to the design motifs. A rarity that seldom comes into the numismatic marketplace; on those rare occasions a specimen does come up for sale, more often than not it is in well-circulated grades, typically VF or so. The PCGS website notes that perhaps just 75 to 100 or so examples of the date are known in all grades; with its mintage of just 3,090 pieces, that number is certainly plausible. We note that only one example of the date has been called mint state by that firm, and that at "just" MS-61. For comparison purposes, NGC has certified two mint state pieces, both called MS-60. Some scattered marks are seen as befits a large gold coin such as this, but no single mark is overly evident; indeed, the in-hand presence of the coin is choice overall. If rare Liberty eagles are your forte, we suggest the choice AU-55 1867 offered here may be just the ticket for your expanding eagle collection.
