FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION A high end, VERY CHOICE specimen of this important Civil War date. While the mintage ticked up a few thousand pieces, these are VERY RARE in this lofty state of preservation, especially so with CAC approval. This is a thickly frosty, pearly near-GEM with a bold, shimmering brilliance. While mostly pearlescent, there is a blush of the faintest sky blue/lilac and clear gold. Sharply struck devices stand out from an exacting blow from the dies. We have looked this coin over and over with a strong glass and are unable to locate a single flaw worthy of mention. The eye appeal is excellent. PCGS 6, NGC 7, CAC 3. In the last dozen years, only two examples have sold in auction, the most recent three years ago in our May 2019 sale. Prior to that, one sold in November 2010 for $23,000. The current CAC CPG value is $16,800 and the PCGS Price Guide value is $17,500. There are 11 graded finer at PCGS, the last PCGS MS65 CAC sold seven years ago! These rarely appear and we expect strong bidding for this important condition rarity. Good luck. Cert.
