- 1721-H French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. La Rochelle Mint. W-11830. VF-25. 93.0 grains. Glossy and attractive light brown, smooth in some areas but showing significant planchet texture in others. The bottom half of the obverse is dominated by horizontal striations, while the reverse shows scattered natural planchet pitting at right center and northeast quadrant. Reverse legend interrupted by rim between 4 o'clock and 6 o'clock, else bold. A few little nicks are noted inside the obverse rim at 10 o'clock. Nice color and decent eye appeal overall. Craige was not able to attribute the reverse of this piece, but identified the obverse as his number 10. Canadian collectors will recognize the provenance as one of the best that can be hoped for in the world of Canadiana; the Reford Collection included an extraordinary array of rare Canadian medals in particular. It was among the first sales cataloged by a young Daniel Fearon. PCGS# 158632. Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Earlier from Sotheby’s Canada sale of the Robert W.
