- 1800/79 Draped Bust Cent. S-194. Rarity-3. Style II Hair. AU-50 (PCGS). Satiny steel-olive and autumn-brown surfaces with a few swirls of crimson-rose color also scattered about on both sides. Bold to sharp overall, as befits the assigned grade, the strike is well centered even if the denticulation around the borders is scant. Smooth in hand with none but a few trivial blemishes that are hardly worthy of concern. The obverse die of this variety was prepared in late 1798 and initially intended, but not used, for production of 1798- or 1799-dated cents. The final digit in the date was either omitted or later effaced, allowing Mint employees to repurpose this die for 1800-dated coinage. This is one of the nicest examples of the Sheldon-194 attribution that we have offered in recent memory, and old friend of our firm, having crossed our desks in 1982 for our (Stack's) sale of the famous Robison Collection.
