- THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV A wonderful GEM example of this very popular New Orleans date, and among the finest graded at NGC! Very high end, this lustrous example has a vivid satiny luster that glows brilliantly in the fields. Virtually untoned, save for the most subtle hint of pearlescent silver-gray. The details are all fully and sharply struck up, the dies clearly coming together with a precision blow. Both sides display a number of peripheral die cracks showing just how long the New Orleans mint would continue to use dies. There are zero imperfections worthy of noting and the eye appeal is excellent. Due to a huge flow of gold entering the economy during the California Gold Rush, the value of silver, relative to gold rose, leading to the export and melting of silver coins. In 1853, the weight of silver coins (except for the silver dollar) was reduced, and the change was denoted by placement of arrows at the date and rays on the reverse. Due to striking issues, the rays were removed from the reverse in 1854, but the arrows remained next to the date through 1855. Ex Larry H. Miller Collection, Part II, Stack's Bowers, December 2020, lot 1084. PCGS 16, NGC 6. This coin realized $10,200 in December 2020, and that was the first time in nearly 11 years that an NGC-graded example had sold in auction. The current Collectors Universe value is $15,000. There is just a SINGLE example graded higher at NGC, an MS68 that has not sold in auction since 2009. A wonderful coin for type or date purposes with a wonderful pedigree. Cert. Number 1634512001 PCGS # 6280
