- OC Die State a/a. Handsome and scarce Mint State quality for this challenging Liberty Seated dollar date. Richly toned surfaces are dressed in blended charcoal-mauve, salmon pink, cobalt blue, antique gold and pinkish-gray shades that are more vivid and varied on the obverse. Typically soft in strike for the issue, especially along the upper obverse border, yet appreciably lustrous and generally smooth in hand. There were no significant sources of domestic silver when the Philadelphia Mint struck just 94,000 silver dollars at the request of bullion depositors in 1857. Most, if not all of the silver for this issue came from imports (primarily from Mexico) or the many foreign coins that had found their way into U.S. commercial use over the preceding several decades. These newly minted silver dollars did not circulate domestically but, instead, were used in the export trade, primarily with Asia after initial export to England, and they were subsequently melted by merchants and bullion brokers in India or China. Throughout virtually the entire Liberty Seated dollar series, 1840 to 1873, the Mexican dollar remained the preferred crown-size coin for use in global commerce. The 1857 is understandably scarce in all grades, and in Mint State it is a notable condition rarity.
