- Dazzling iridescent toning greets the viewer from both sides of this stunning Superb Gem. The toning includes colors of orange-russet, pinkish-silver, sandy-gold and pale olive that are boldest at the borders. Lustrous and satiny in texture with a virtually pristine appearance to razor sharp features.
A mintage of 8,031,600 coins sufficed for the Denver Mint to meet the Treasury Department's order for half dollars in 1950. This issue's characteristics are typical for an early date D-Mint Franklin half dollar: most Mint States examples are sharply struck and qualify as Full Bell Lines, but most are also very heavily abraded. Writing in the fourth (2023) edition of his Guide Book of Franklin & Kennedy Half Dollars, Rick Tomaska reinforces this point when he states that, "Bagmarks are a serious problem for this date." The author further observes:
The 1950-D ranks among the rarest issues in the series in superb color-toned condition. The fact that Mint sets were not issued in 1950 is the primary cause.
It is truly remarkable, then, that the offered coin is not only exceptionally well preserved in Superb Gem Mint State, but that it is also vividly and attractively toned. Clearly this is an offering that deserves the undivided attention of astute Franklin half dollar enthusiasts.
