- DUPLICATES FROM THE BLACKCAT COLLECTION This is a very important and VERY RARE Pattern issue, the Bickford $10, named after American businessman Dana Bickford, who, while extensively traveling throughout Europe noted the inconvenience and cost of exchanging coins of one nation for another. His proposal went no where, but officials saw enough merit to produce prototypes. These EXTREMELY RARE Patterns were struck in gold, copper, aluminum, and nickel (as here). The obverse shows Liberty facing left with a starred crown inscribed LIBERTY and an olive branch tied around her neck. The reverse has the exchange rate value in DOLLARS (10), STERLING (2 Pounds, 1 shilling, 1 penny), MARKEN (41.99), KRONEN (37.31), GULDEN (20.73), and FRANCS (51.81) around, with the weight and standard (16.72 grams, 900 FINE) and the word UBIQUE (which is Latin for ubiquitous). Struck in nickel with a reeded edge, this is a HIGH RARITY-7, with only two or three known in all grades. Typical of the metal, the fields are watery reflective with a delicate dusting of frosty iridescent toning. The hardness of the nickel alloy prevented some minor softness in the reverse center and perhaps caused the obverse die to dramatically crack at 5:00 (all known examples in this alloy display this break). Some minor mint made planchet flakes are noted under a glass and three toning dots (2 on the obverse and on on the reverse) serve as pedigree markers. Housed in an older blue tag PCGS holder. The Bickford $10 is part of a very special subset of patterns that were proposals for an international circulating gold coinage. After the Civil War, and the American economy steamed ahead strongly in many different industries and international trade, the desire among businessmen for coins that could be utilized in Europe grew. The earliest was struck in 1868. Other patterns in this series include the 1868 $5/25 Francs, J-656-659; the Bickford $10, J-1373-1378; the Stella $4 patterns of 1879-80, J-1635-1641, J-1657-1662; the 1879 $20 Quintuple Stella, J-1643-1644; and the Goloid Metric Dollars of 1879-1880, J-1622-1634; J-1645-1656. Ex Possibly King Farouk Collection (?); Abe Kosoff Estate, Bowers & Merena, November 1985, lot 1091; unknown intermediaries; William Rau Collection; Heritage's sale of the William Rau Collection, April 2018, lot 4502; Black Cat Collection. The other Bickford $10s in nickel are as follows: Reeded Edge: Kagin's 77 ANA: B/R RCR #33 & #34; Hughes 7/80, Superior 10/91; B/M 11/92 as PCGS PR63; Heritage 11/03; Heritage 3/10; Simpson; Heritage 5/22, as PCGS PR64. Plain Edge (2 known): 1. Bass Collection, broadstruck out of collar. 2. Last seen in the 1914 ANS Exhibit. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. The CAC CPG value is listed at $33,600. The Simpson coin, graded PCGS PR64 CAC has a very similar look and sold for $36,000 in May 2022, and is the only other example to appear in auction in recent memory. This is a VERY RARE opportunity that will not likely repeat anytime soon! Bid accordingly! Cert. Number 2866757 PCGS # 61681
