- 1896 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-62+ (PCGS). CAC. Splendid golden-rose surfaces are sharply struck, highly lustrous and sure to appeal to quality conscious gold enthusiasts. The circulation strike 1896 has a recorded mintage of 792,535 pieces, down more than one million coins from the previous year's production figure at Philadelphia. As is typical, much of the mintage was shipped overseas in business and other transactions. Mint State coins have been coming back to America's shores for decades, and our current estimate for such examples is in the range of 10,000 to 16,000 or more coins.
