- A VERY RARE modern pattern. The mint created these Martha Washington dies to test new compositions beginning in 1965 (and they have been used in various other tests since, most notably in 1999 with the change over from the Susan B. Anthony dollar to the Sacagawea dollar). The obverse depicts Martha Washington facing right and the reverse shows a 3/4 view of Mount Vernon. Struck on a copper-nickel clad planchet as adopted in 1965 with a reeded edge, rarity unlisted in Judd, thought unique in Pollock. We conjecture that the rarity is R-7+. In the 10th Edition of the Judd reference Q. David Bowers writes: "Somewhat similar to the scenario of 1942, fantasy designs were prepared with no relation to current coinage motifs, in the present instance to avoid creating 'rarities' by using regular dies. Full brilliant mint luster shines on both sides of this radiant premium GEM. The strike is bold with a very strong eye appeal. When we think of important coinage milestones in American history, clearly the 1792-95 period, establishing the mint and the beginnings of our federal coinage stick out. Also the gold rushes and the introduction of the $20, the Act of 1873 ending the coinage of silver dollars, Act of 11878 bringing back the silver dollar and the mountains of Morgan dollars that were struck. And of course even today the various actions in 1933-34 which took gold out of our economy is familiar to most collectors. What is often overlooked in modern numismatics is when, in the early 1960s, the silver price began to move up, making the use of silver for circulating coinage impractical. Judd lists a dozen different compositions that were tested using these dies. The listed composition for the J-2115 is 75% copper, 25% nickel. This coin was recently discovered in Europe by a sharp-eyed numismatist who purchased it (along with the J-2131 in the following lot) raw, and consigned them to us for this sale. PCGS had yet to certify ANY of the patterns J-2115 to J-2126. Two sets, each containing 3 dime, 3 quarter, and 3 half dollar sized patterns, encased in acrylic, were donated to the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian, a few others are known, but mostly of the J-2116, which is still considered R-7-. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. This is the ONLY J-2115 graded by either service. Looking at auction records for J-21116, the values are all over the place, as they exist in grades from MS61 to MS65 (all NGC). The NGC MS65 sold in April 2008 for $5,750 and in the 2006 ANA auction an MS63 sold for an astonishing $25,300! We are certain that this GEM will entice any pattern collector! Cert.
