- "1787" Fugio Copper. "New Haven Restrike." Newman 104-FF, W-17560. URS-10. Copper. EF-45 (PCGS). Here's an anomaly in the Fugio copper series -- a circulated New Haven "Restrike." We suppose the chances are good that it was a pocket-piece and not actually in circulation, but still, this issue is nearly always found in Mint State grades. Deep golden tan with lighter high points. A few scattered marks are noted, as is the usual pattern of heavy die rust seen on the "restrikes." Unusual in nature and certainly worthy of pursuit.

The so-called “New Haven Restrike” has occupied many paragraphs of print in The Colonial Newsletter in particular, but also other publications. The story went that unused original dies were found circa 1858 by young C. Wyllis Betts at the Broome & Platt store in New Haven, location of an original minting facility. These were popularized and sold by Horatio Rust. Fast forward to the 20th century when these “restrikes” were carefully studied by several scholars, leading to the current view that the dies were not original to 1787, but were created in the late 1850s. Be that as it may, these pieces are an important adjunct to a Fugio collection, are listed in A Guide Book of United States Coins, and have been in strong demand for a long time.
