- Ranking among the top seven graded at PCGS, the present MS67 1837 half dime is an intriguingly appealing SUPERB GEM example of this first year of issue Seated Liberty half dime, featuring Christian Gobrecht's classic No Stars design. Brilliant, frosty mint luster has a rich, satiny finish on both sides, which are mostly untoned with just the faintest pale golden-tan that accents the surfaces and adds to the substantial visual allure. Sharply struck up from broken dies, substantial die cracks are seen on both the obverse and reverse. A microfleck or two can be seen with a strong glass on the reverse, but there are no visually distracting lines, marks, or anything else that would affect the bold eye appeal. PCGS 5, NGC 4, CAC 6. The three most recent PCGS graded auction appearances were for the same coin, which most recently sold in our September 2018 Regency Auction for $15,863; prior to that the Pogue coin sold for $28,200. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $22,500. Just two coins are graded finer, and we sold one, a PCGS MS67+ CAC for $36,425 in our May 2019 Regency Auction. This is a gorgeous example for this transitional issue and a great type coin for the advanced collector; we expect very intense bidding for this one when it crosses the block. Cert.
