- THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST QUARTERS
Tied for the HIGHEST graded numerically and UNIQUE in the Prooflike designation at PCGS. One look at this simply AMAZING SUPERB GEM and you know instantly that this coin is truly something special. There are not enough superlatives or adjectives to paint an accurate portrait of this 1837 B-2.
The B-2 die pairing was used to strike coins that have been designated Proof in the Condition Census. While today the Col. Green-Pittman-Pogue coin, which was called a Proof in the Pittman catalog, certified PF68 CAM by NGC, and since graded PCGS MS67 at the time of the Pogue sale. The other example is listed as PR63 and is housed in the National Numismatic Collection of the Smithsonian Institution.
The late numismatic scholar, David Akers, who, as well being famous for his research and expertise in U.S. Gold coinage, was also an expert in early Proof coinage. When he was cataloging the above mentioned Pogue coin as part of the Pittman Collection, he wrote: “Prooflike business strikes of this variety are known... However, the prooflike examples of this date that I have seen are of a significantly different nature and fabric..." than that coin that was called a Proof. This SUPERB GEM has deeply reflective, fully brilliant, watery fields that contrast beautifully against the thickly frosted devices. The design elements are razor sharp in striking definition from lightly clashed dies. Clearly the dies came together without a planchet between them early on in its production run, with the fully polished fields still intact. Depending on the angle you tilt the flawless surfaces in a light, there is a distinctly cameo-like contrast. A splashes of dappled and mottled blue, gold, teal, emerald, rose, and champagne highlights the underlying antique silver hues. When the light hits the watery-reflective underlying brilliance the colors really pop in the light. The eye appeal is truly sensational and very high end. The texture of the fully Prooflike surfaces is UNIQUELY attributed on this SUPERB GEM.
PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. The above cited Pittman-Pogue coin graded MS67 by PCGS and formerly PF68 CAM by NGC, realized $152,750 in May 2015; the market today is stronger than it was eight years ago. This coin carries a PCGS Price Guide value of $200,000. While this truly SUPERB and UNIQUE Prooflike will fit nicely in any top notch set of early quarters, we expect it will end up in a WORLD CLASS Box of 20 or type set! This is an opportunity that once it passes, may not present itself again! If you want to add this spectacular coin to your collection, bid aggressively!
