1861 Indian Cent. Proof-65 (NGC). Eagle Eye Photo Seal. A lovely rose-gold Proof of the date, sharply struck and visually appealing. Low magnification reveals a modest woodgrain effect to the surfaces. As for Proofs of the date, the Bowers reference on the series (Whitman, 2nd Edition, 2009) notes: "Most of the original mintage of 1,000 pieces remained unsold and might have been destroyed, or were simply released into circulation. It may be that only a few hundred pieces survived." Choice and appealing, with fewer than 10 Proofs of the date deemed finer by NGC.
