- 1870 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. This is a richly original specimen, boldly toned over surfaces that readily reveal a reflective finish in the fields as the coin dips into a light. As an issue this is one of the more carelessly produced of the late date Proof Liberty Seated dollars, but the present example is superior in this regard with full striking detail that even extends to the eagle's right leg and talon. Vivid multicolored undertones further enhance the appeal of this handsome near-Gem. With 1,000 coins struck the 1870 boasts the highest mintage among Proof Liberty Seated dollars of the Motto design type. Survivors are scarce relative to the reported mintage, however, indicating that many examples may have remained unsold at the time of issue, thereby being lost to future generations of numismatists.
