- Although certainly made under private contract, the exact producer of this early issue for the Kingdom of Hawaii is not known. The government's agent James Jackson Jarvis placed the order for 100,000 coins, probably with a New England firm. The coins were delivered to the islands on May 3, 1847, on board the merchant ship Montreal, which set sail from Boston and called at Rio de Janeiro and Tahiti along the way. This issue enjoyed only limited success with Hawaiian merchants, and plans for further coinage were suspended. Their legal tender status ceased in 1884, and the following year approximately 88,000 coins remaining in treasury hands were shipped abroad as scrap metal and melted. This fortunate Choice Mint State survivor offers crisp striking detail and handsome, rich toning in rose-brown. An attractive example of this interesting Kingdom of Hawaii issue.
