- 1909 Lincoln Cent. Proof-66+ RD (PCGS). CAC.
Beautiful satin surfaces exhibit undertones of reddish-pink to otherwise dominant deep orange color. Both sides are fully struck, as befits the method of manufacture, with a silky smooth appearance that borders on pristine. Given the brevity of the press run for the short lived 1909 V.D.B. type, the only Proof 1909 Lincoln cents that were available to most contemporary collectors are examples of the design without the designer's initials at the lower reverse border. The 1909 Lincoln has a Proof mintage of 2,618 pieces per the Guide Book, although David W. Lange (1996) reports a slightly different total of 2,198 coins. In either case, enough specimens have been saved that the issue turns up fairly frequently in today's market. The typical offering is for a Proof-64 or Proof-65, however, and often with Red and Brown color. Gem full Red examples, as here, represent a significant find and fleeting bidding opportunity that deserves serious consideration.
PCGS Population: 7; 12 finer in this category (Proof-68 RD finest).
