- 1927 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 51 mm. By John R. Sinnock. JK AC-71a. Rarity-4. Edge Incuse FREAS STYER. MS-66 (NGC).
The finish is warm, predominantly even golden-copper with slightly bolder gray-brown patina in and around the central obverse. Overall smooth with a sharply executed strike and outstanding visual appeal.
This medal features the third style of President Coolidge's portrait used in the series, the same die also used for the 1926, 1928 and 1929 issues. On the reverse, Mercury wearing winged Petasos holds a cornucopia gushing fruit and grain with the inscription NATIONAL PROSPERITY below. This lovely design is a monument to the boundless optimism and prosperity of the Roaring Twenties that came to an abrupt end with the market crash of 1929. Fifty medals were struck for the 1927 Assay Commission meeting on February 14 of that year. This particular specimen was originally presented to Philadelphia Mint Superintendent Freas Styer.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Collector tag with attribution notation included.
